5 apps that will enhance your driving in the UAE

Life is all about being positive, in life and on the road. To help you keep your cool, we have compiled 5 amazing apps to ease your driving woes in the United Arab Emirates. So after you’ve found your ideal rental car in Dubai, search through the Google Play Store or Apple Itunes Store and download these high-utility driving apps.

1. Waze better than Google Maps

Waze is like Google Maps, just way cooler. Thanks to its community-powered model and active users in Dubai, you get alerted about approaching accidents, traffic jams and even speed traps, among others, shared by other drivers in real-time. Save on time, gas money and the potential heartache of being traffucked. Perhaps the next time you’re late to work – you won’t be.

Update: So the Waze app has greatly improved in terms of accurate data, especially in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. It still relies on you, the user, to report and review information so don’t stop contributing fellow expat in the UAE. There’s also a nifty Speed Limit feature that tells you when you exceed the speed limit of the road or highway you’re driving on at the moment. Infact, Google picked up Waze.

2. RTA – All about Roads & Transport in Dubai

The all-new RTA (Road & Transport Authority, Dubai) app is full of utility for every Dubai resident and tourist. The app conveniently groups utility features for the Driver. From traffic fines inquiry and payment to renewing parking tickets through mParking (still uses SMS). The places of interest section lists a range of to-do’s and essential location maps.

Update: The Dubai RTA (or RTA Dubai) app has progressed tremendously in terms of UI and UX. We’re totally lovin’ it! There’s also a convenient way to chat with RTA service agents directly through the app making things a lot more convenient.

3. TripAdvisor™

Heard of it? Already know it’s great? Why isn’t it installed on your phone then? For some reason, most people install TripAdvisor only before or during a trip to a new place. But believe us if you’d, TripAdvisor’s got a wealth of info (with brilliant reviews) about places across the UAE, more so Dubai and Abu Dhabi. We love their suggested ‘Things To Do’ and the honest reviews by travelers. And of course, updated with accurate Google Map location of each and every place.

Update: We featured this HUDWAY app that turns your ordinary windshield into a digital HUD by projecting the screen. It was all good when it came out but they never fixed the many bugs users (including ourselves reported) so we replaced it with something way more useful.

4. Find My Car – Remembers your parking spot

Tired of forgetting where you parked your car? Tell me about it, the situation only gets worse in the summers. Find My Car is yet another simple but effective app here to save the day. Simply tag the position of your car by switching on your GPS or take a picture of your parking spot (essential for underground parking). We just hope the UI evolves soonly.

Update: The app’s a lot more reliable now with successive updates. Instantly capture your position by just switching on your GPS. There’s also a premium version: Find My Cars+ that gives you a few useful features for AED 3.89 – worth it if you’re forgetful or often end up parking in unfriendly parking lots.

5. Google Now – Getting smarter with time

Google is known for its sheer brilliance. The Google Now app has had a handful utility features updated in recent times. Among them is a new Parking Location card that automatically saves the approximate location of where you ended your last drive. A simple concept that uses your GPS and phone sensors to distinguish driving in a vehicle from walking or otherwise.

Update: It’s called ‘Google Now Launcher’ and seems it’s an in-built feature for most Android Devices. A lot new Card features that’s personalized with your real-time travel updates, meetings and much more. Google knows how it’s done so don’t miss out on this Apple iPhone Users.
